Benefits and Allowances for Military PCS Relocation

military_relocation_specialist__realtorMilitary PCS relocation is an important part of the military service member’s lifestyle.  As military families move around the country, they become more and more familiar with the benefits and allowances made available to them by the U.S. military.  The best way to learn about these relocation entitlements is to visit the finance office at your current duty station.  There they will explain to you what the military will cover in terms of your major and minor moving expenses.

As many real estate blogs often fail to explain, military relocation specialists must acquire a certain set of skills and experience.  Most importantly, they must understand how a Permanent Change of Station, or military PCS relocation, really works.  Then they must act quickly to help the service member locate a new home near the military base.  With the current conditions in the real estate market, this is not as easy as it used to be.  Many military families are struggling because the home in their last place of residence is still sitting on the market. Even if you’re not moving just yet, now is the time to become familiar with the benefits provided by the military – before, during and after a military PCS relocation.

Here are a few of the PCS benefits and allowances for military relocation:

  • You can be placed on permissive TDY (Temporary Duty) for up to ten days when making a permanent change of station. This gives military members who are not living on base the opportunity to arrive at their new base early and use the extra time for house-hunting without it being charged as “leave.”
  • The military will partially offset the cost of lodging and meals (up to $180 per day) when a service member and his/her dependents must live in temporary housing within the continental United States.
  • For overseas relocations, the service member can receive up to five days at the losing duty station, and up to 60 days may be paid for temporary lodging and meal expenses after arriving at an overseas location.
  • A Dislocation Allowance is usually paid when a household is relocated due to a PCS.  This stipend is intended to partially reimburse the service member for expenses not otherwise reimbursed through other military benefits.
  • When a military family travels to their new duty station by car, the service member is entitled to a mileage allowance.  Military members and their dependents may also travel via military aircraft to foreign destinations or by commercial means if no military aircraft is available.

All of these benefits for military PCS relocation make it easy for the service member to focus on more important aspects of the move, such as finding the right home at the right price.  This is where a real estate agent comes in, preferably one who has experience in military relocation.  The Colorado Springs realtors at Action Team Realty will make your move to this region seamless.
